Why You Shouldn’t Trust Emails Selling SEO Services

September 20, 2011

I’m a little perturbed at the increase in frequency of emails to my clients that look similar to the one found here:

We offer quality Search Engine Optimization / SEO Services and Internet Marketing Solutions. Our dedicated team of SEO Professionals ensures Top 10 search engine rankings. Our SEO Processes are designed in view of the SEO guidelines, and white hat SEO techniques are strictly followed to ensure that our clients from world over get the best SEO services. Please reply to this email so we can send you more details.

from: cecilia (at) gmail.com

Right off the bat, the gmail email address offers no credibility behind the email – one is still left to wonder who this person is and what company they work for (if they are even a real person). But the real clincher behind this email is – if this supposed person who works for a mysterious company is so good at SEO, then why are they emailing YOU? Is it because they don’t have enough clients because not enough people have found them through their own internet marketing efforts?

My best recommendation is if you are looking for an SEO or internet marketing firm, Google “SEO” and the city and/or state your business is in, talk to your friends/colleagues who have worked with a firm or contact us for a no obligation proposal.

Liberty Names of America Domain Renewal SCAM

April 2, 2009

Last year, I registered a domain name for a client and didn’t turn on the free WHOIS privacy that I get through my registrar at no charge when I purchase a domain name for $14.95 (ah hem…Godaddy charges $9.95 for the domain name and $25.00 per year for privacy – that’s how they get you ).

What happened as a result of not turning on this privacy has been a host of fake domain name renewals from various domain name renewal services all with an address of Niagara Falls, NY but the name varies each time. This time they are called “Liberty Names of America.”

I remember last time I got a fake renewal letter like this, I called them up and told them to take me off of their mailing list. They blatantly said “No!” I said “Yes! You are sending this letter to the wrong person – I know what is going on. Don’t send me anything else from your company.” They replied, “Don’t worry, we will.” And they didn’t lie, I got another one, this time from Liberty Names of America.

I know this is an age old scam and I remember in the 90’s working for a company where the president had bought 20 or so domain names. We received hundreds of renewal notices for these domains – so many that it seemed like every day our domains were up for renewal.

It’s a shame that this problem still exists and that no one is stopping them. I guess my best piece of advice is make sure your domain registrar is an accredited I-CANN domain name reseller and stick to only one registrar to avoid confusion.

As for Liberty Names of America, I hope somebody shuts you down or your wasting $.42 on each bogus renewal letter puts you out of business.  I recycled this piece of junk mail so at least some good came out of it.

Do not renew your domain name with Liberty Names of America, they are a SCAM!

The BBB has granted Liberty Names of America the grade of an “F!”

Steve Wilson of TopRankingLinks.com is a SCAM

March 15, 2009

I was away the last few days on retreat in Traverse City, Michigan. While I was there, I received a few contacts through my contact form. One from a potential customer and one from a guy named Steve Wilson of toprankinglinks.com. Here was the inquiry:

Hello, my name is Steve Wilson and I am an internet marketing specialist. I was looking at websites under the keyword cosmetic dentist grayling and came across your site ponderconsulting.com. I see that you’re ranked #3 on page 41 in google.

I am not sure if you are aware of why you are ranked this low but more importantly how easily correctable this is. There is no reason you cannot have a top three ranking for any keyword which is important to you based on your site structure and content.

You have a very nice site. You need significantly more one way anchor text backlinks. If you are interested I can help you with this… I am talking about getting you ranked for ALL your keywords. Adding new backlinks on a steady and consistent basis from high PR quality websites is what produces the rankings you are looking for ponderconsulting.com.

The right kind of links are very critical in getting top ranking….and I can hand deliver these quality links to you. My partners and I own 1000’s of websites and offer private linking to hundreds of website owners just like yourself. I did not send this email out to very many people but I am currently reaching out to a list of your ‘keyword competitors’ as well. But I do favor your website because I can see your website monetizing the targeted website traffic this can deliver.

I have your contact info as: phone #(989) 344-8224. Is it ok if I give you a call? If so, just hit reply and give me the green light to call you for free consultation. I have a very simple way to prove that what I do works and it is risk free for you to try. Nothing beats seeing the results with your own eyes.

Is it ok if I give you a call? I would love to pursue this further over the phone with you or should I go somewhere else?

Sincerely,
Steve Wilson
Senior Executive
TopRankingLinks.com

P.S – I am talking about keywords that produce the right kind of traffic…Traffic that delivers leads, sales and profits. Because getting a ranking that does not generate leads and sales is worthless. Is it Ok to give you a call? If so, just hit reply and tell me specifically who to ask for when I call and what time of day is best to reach that person.

There are so many things wrong with this letter.  First of all, I am a proven SEO expert who has never charged more than $1000 to get a client on the first page of Google for their given keywords (Steve Wilson is charging $500 per month for links alone). Secondly, can anyone think of why I would want to rank for “cosmetic dentist grayling”, that is ridiculous and absurd. So I went to Google and typed in “top ranking links” and his site was nowhere to be found, even adding his name. Lastly, some of the information is highly inaccurate, it isn’t all about links, there are more than 100 factors.

“The answer is NO Steve, you can’t give me a call.”  The mere decision by him to email me shows he has no cognitive thinking skills. It would be like emailing Barack Obama and asking him if he wants to run for President. He is the president, just like I am SEO. I breathe, sleep and live the internet.
